Our tips for your holiday in the South Tyrol

„Daddy, what is there for us to do in South Tyrol?!“

Our tips for families who are on holiday in South Tyrol:
  • 30 Alps and even more alpine huts await your visit! With teh Almencard you can use the mountain railway free of charge!
  • Fane Alm... the most picturesque and rustic alpine village in South Tyrol! It grew up in the Middle Ages as a hospital for those suffering from cholera or the plague and today it is one of the last remaining examples of a settlement of alpine huts of this kind in South Tyrol. Traditional houses, hay barns and cow sheds, a little church and three alpine inns!
  • Pfunder farms... a farming tradition
  • Mühlbach Hermitage… an historical fortress from the 15th century
  • Gitschberg panoramic platform... imposing view of more than 500 mountain peaks – the Stubai Alps, Ötztal Alps, the Rieserfern, Sarntal Alps and Dolomites can all be seen from this platform!
  • Mühlbach... Life in a medieval market township
  • Rodenegg Castle... the earliest examples of secular wall painting in the German-speaking world
  • Vintl textile museum… from sheep to woollen cloak
  • Bathing in cool waters… in, for example, the Alpine pool at Meransen , in the Issinger Weiher Lake, Vahrner Lake or in the Acquarena fun pool in Brixen
  • Climbing & action at the adventure climbing park in Issing
  • Funbob Innichen … tobogganing fun for all the family! And the Funbob toboggan run at Haunold in the Upper Pustertal Valley is full of activity at night too.
  • Ötzi and Bozen archaeological museum Once upon a time, over 5,000 years ago... The Ice Man is an archaeological sensation and gives us some insight into how people must have lived during the Eneolithic period.
  • Bergila mountain pine oil distillery between Kiens and Issing
  • Keschtnweg Way… from Vahrn to the Bozen Basin. The Keschtnweg Way takes you through colourful mixed woodland, lush green meadows and impressive chestnut-tree groves – a unique natural experience!
  • Neustift Monastery… The Augustine Order at Neustift near Vahrn occupies the largest and most famous monastery in the whole of the South Tyrol. 30 Augustine canons still live and practise here today! The library, basilica, herb garden and wine cellars are particularly worth a visit!
  • Experience the deepest mines in Europe! The deepest mines in Europe take you into a mysterious underground world where dark tunnels and the light of pit lamps once shaped the lives of miners and their families
  • Earth pyramids & mills trail in Terenten… from corn to bread in corn mills up to 500 year-old
  • Town of Bruneck with its narrow streets, shops and Bruneck Castle where the Messner Mountain Museum is due to open in 2010
  • Drei Zinnen open cheese dairy in Toblach: come and see how cheese is made…
  • Pragser Wildsee Lake– Antholzer See Lake - Toblacher See Lake… three beautiful Dolomite lakes
  • countless castles & fortresses such as Michelsburg fortress and Castle Sand in Taufers
  • Dolomythos … museum of the Dolomites in Innichen
  • Ridnaun & Prettau show mines… Experience the unique world of mining. The show mine at Prettau gives a fascinating insight into copper mining from prehistoric times to the present day.
  • Ratschings Gilfenklamm ravine … A unique natural phenomenon which will stick in your memory. The Ratschings Stream froths and foams its way between towering cliff walls and thunders down to the valley over numerous waterfalls.
  • Museum of hunting and fishing at Wolfsthurn Castle … information on the cultural history of game and hunting, hunting folklore and fishing, all presented in an entertaining format. In a separate area of the museum set out with a number of fun activities and games, children can learn all sorts of exciting facts about animal noises and tracks, stag antlers and bear caves.
  • Museum of minerals in Teis … Discovering precious stones. Here you can marvel at the glittering minerals dug from the excavation site at Teis and from other alpine regions
  • Dietenheim folklore museum … The buildings and exhibitions take the visitor back to a time many centuries ago and tell of old beliefs and customs, of daily life in days gone by. Attentive visitors will no doubt learn a great deal from being able to compare our own lives today to that of our ancestors.
  • Innsbruck alpine zoo … Little visitors will be able to experience more than 2000 animals of 150 different species in the highest zoo in Europe. The exhibition of alpine life-forms both past and present makes this “alpine animal park” particularly special.
  • Brixen … Over 1000 years old, the ancient winding streets and town houses, balconies and bridges make Brixen thoroughly worth a visit. Come and experience the living history of its churches, cathedral and cloisters with their unique gothic frescos and former prince bishop’s palace.
